Monty’s Allergy Run-In

Disclaimer: Monty’s allergies are not anaphylactic in nature. I know what his allergies look like, and I know how he acts at base-line and in a flare. If you are unsure about any of these things, you should consider allergen consumption a medical emergency & seek veterinary care right away.

I couldn’t link my copy of the Plumb’s Veterinary Handbook, but here’s an exercert regarding Metronidazole, a common antibiotic prescribed for diarrhea in dogs. I alluded to this in my post, stating I wouldn’t be pursing anti-biotic treatment for Monty’s diarrhea. “Although metronidazole is frequently used for acute nonspecific diarrhea in dogs, there is little evidence to support this use. One small study found that metronidazole shortened the duration of acute nonspecific diarrhea by ≈1.5 days compared with placebo. Another study found no statistically significant difference in time to acceptable fecal consistency between metronidazole, probiotics, or placebo. Metronidazole should not be used indiscriminately, as its use may have a significant and potentially sustained impact on the GI microbiota.” Plumb DC. Metronidazole. Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook. 18th ed. Wiley; 2025:900.

Does My Pet Need a Bland Diet? (Not mentioned here, but many dogs are not fed a rotating diet. When their diet is changed abruptly, it can cause GI upset. Thinking critically about this, I question if a sudden switch to a “bland diet” is wise, especially if the dog is not used to diet rotation and is already experiencing GI upset.)
